Lycopene
The interesting characteristic of lycopene is its ability to protect cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals have been linked to the changes that accompany ageing as well as various types of tumours. Many studies have shown that a regular intake of tomatoes lowers cancer risk, especially stomach and lung cancer. Apparently they have the same protective effect on the mouth as well as on the pharynx. Further studies are attempting to verify if these findings also apply to the prostate.
The tomato is, therefore, listed among the foods that can prevent cancer. It does not have any chemical alternatives. In fact, lycopene extract, isolated from the tomato, has less of a protective effect than the tomato.
This comes as no surprise, as mother earth offers us appetizing fruit such as the tomato, in which the synergic action of a variety of its nutrients determines positive effects on our health. |
